2x10 upgrade

I’m becoming very intrigued by the whole 10x2 thing, I’ve started to race and so most of my rides are race training fast rides and I really can’t remember the last time I used my granny ring, also as my legs are getting stronger I find myself switching between big and middle ring a lot more and any improved performance with that shifting would be awesome. So my question is, can I upgrade my 9x3 setup in stages? If I buy, for instance an XT Crankset that’s designed for 2x10, will my 9 speed chain and cassette work ok with it till I buy the other bits? I saw on one web site that 2x10 stuff is designed to ONLY work 10 speed components. Alternatively would my best first step be a 10 speed cassette and shifter on the back and would that work with a 9 speed chain. I know this is a lot of questions but I’d appreciate your thoughts.
