Just to praise a very small LBS in Henleaze, Bristol. Last time I bought anything significant from them would have been, erm, about 33 years ago. But riding up to Bristol on Thursday, travelling light, I started having trouble with the gear shifting. I dropped into Evans in the city centre - they had a quick look, thought it might be a faulty ratchet in the shifter, and the next available time was in about eight days. Hmm, I needed to cycle back to Exeter the next day. Hmm.

So I got back to parents' house with my limited gears, inspected the bike properly, and saw that the cable from the shifter (Ultegra) had frayed where it leaves the shifter and goes into the sheath, jamming in the sheath. Having neither cable nor tools, I chanced it and rode the mile to Harveys on Henleaze Road, and within 20 minutes it was all sorted, gears indexed, seatpost regreased, and with much reminiscing about the Falcon I bought from them in about 1978. All for £21.

They've been going 78 years, and with service like that I hope they keep going for the next 78 and beyond. It was like a step back in time for me, in the nicest possible way.

Thanks for the tip! I've cycled down Henleaze Road hundreds of times and never knew there was a bike shop on it, let alone a helpful one.
