Hi all,

Got my first road bike a couple of months ago and enjoying it thoroughly, however, thinking of updating it to something a bit more expensive. Got a Trek 1.1 currently, which is great for me just now, but looking to get a bit more serious.

If anyone could give me some advice for a good road bike between £1000 and £1500.

I am not asking for someone to research all possible bikes in that price range, but if you think a bike in this price range is a good buy all contributions would be helpful :)

Yep CAAD10 105. £1300 so buy that, save for a few months and get some rs80 wheels, keep the originals for winter. All the bike you need if you want something that goes fast, reasonably comfortable, climbs, descends. must, like black though.

Ribble sportive Bianco, for between £1000-£1400 got a few choices of groupset, 105 or Ultegra or Sram rival or force, or the campag stuff. £1100 will get you the rival, then put a better wheelset on
  • there's loads of bikes around for that price range....full carbon frames and 105 (or equivalent) set up. Have a gander around the bike shops and see if they'll let you test ride any that you fancy

I've got a Focus Cayo with 105 and RS80 wheels, could probably get that set up for something like £1400 or less

  • Wow 13 different suggestions (from 15 people) but then again the list is probably endless as most manufacturers make a bike in that price range and I would hazard a guess that none of them are rubbish.

Maybe you could get some more focussed answers if you defined what "serious" means to you?
Do you want to race and if yes what type of racing?
Do you want to ride audaxes or sportives?
Do you want to commute on it?
Do you want to tour on it?
Do you need the lightest bike possible or the strongest one?
Do you need/want to buy new wheels or do you have some already?
Do you want a carbon or titanium or aluminium or steel bike?
Do you like Shimano or Campag or Sram?

There is probably as many questions as there are bikes but understanding your priorities will help to choose the right bike (or make it more difficult).
  • I went up to Planet X in Rotherham a while ago with a friend of mine and we both ended up coming away after placing orders. I had flipped between a Felt, Pinarello, Kuota, and a Moda prior to that. What was good (from my perspective) was that Planet X seemed willing to allow you to change components on the bikes, upgrade, downgrade, whatever, but it feels much better to have something 'bespoke' rather than buying stuff that's off the peg.
