Spent last week or so trying to buy standard shorts (ie non-bib) from Shutt VR - have already got a pair and they're great - but have now been told they will no longer be stocking them in large (I'm a 34" waist).

Shame. Anyone got any other tips for a good pair of shorts?

They may not be the best out there, but they're not bad and stupid cheap. ~£8
Stock comes and goes so get anything you see...

Generally they can be great for outdoors/fitness kits there.

Alternatively if you want to spend some money

Best tip would be to wear bibs! :)

I don't get them - are they for winter riding or something?? They seem huge for summer time.

    Bibs are all year round.

What they do is eliminate the stomach band, which helps you breathe easier. They're also more comfy and the pad stays put as the shoulder straps mean that they shouldn't move.

It also stops skin being shown if your jersey starts to ride up a little.

I'd highly recommend you trying some bibs out! You'll soon ditch the shorts.

Are they not a bit sweaty in the hot weather???

Everything's sweaty in hot weather, but some makes are more summer orientated.

If you carry a few pounds around your middle they are supremely comfortable compared to standard shorts. There is also a far wider choice of brands and colours.

It's not just if you carry a few pounds. They're supremely comfortable even if you#'re big or little.

Bibs all the way, only time I wear shorts is for the commute.

Like has been said above, try em and you won't go back.

Why would they be more sweaty? If the pro peloton wear them that should tell you something. They are FAR superior to simple shorts. The biggest benefit is they don't 'pull down' as you get into a tuck, the belly area stays put without clinching you and they are made of superior technical fabrics these days which wick your sweat away.

I remember riding in normal shorts and wool jersey as a teenager and they just got sodden!

+1 for bibs. They are very comfortable, I wouldn't go back to wearing shorts.
Where would you be if you fell down a hole?.. Stuck down a hole... in the fog... Stuck down a hole, in the fog, at night... WITH AN OWL!

Besides a goodpair of shoes, bibs have been the best money I've spent on my clothing. A couple thousands kms in the last 2 or 3 months and they are still perfect
