I have been riding a Trek 1.5 (2010) for the last year or so, and have just put in an order for a 2011 Scott CR1 Comp, which I will be paying off bit by bit until (hopefully) November. I am 35 and 175 lbs, my worry is that the frame (as my first carbon) seems so brittle when you flick it (as a lot of carbon frames seem) and I am starting to wonder if I have made a good decision or will the bike be broken in 6 months - I do sportives, and dont race aggressively so hope not to be coming off too often. Are these frames strong and reliable (and safe), secondly has anyone upgraded from similar to my Trek to CR1 and is the difference incredible? Thanks

  • Carbon frames are alot more hard wearing than you think, you shouldn't have any problems, if they were that fragile then people simply wouldn't buy them.

Just be careful not to leave it out in the rain
  • 'cause we all know carbon doesn't work in the rain!...

Lol at the amount of people posting about their carbon frames asking if they will break.

I bought a Scott cr1 comp oh about 6 weeks ago, love it to bits. I settled on that because of the claimed comfort and relaxed geometry (no idea what that means.).
Previously I had a Giant FCRC also carbon, but a hybrid (loved that also.). I can confirm that the Scott is a lot more comfortable with regards to smoothing out poor road surfaces.
Forget about it being carbon and just treat it as you would any other.
I know what you mean about the noise though, the scott has quite a sizeable top tube and when you tap it with your knuckles ti sounds like a drain pipe.
Don't worry about it, it'll be fine.
    Graham. :D

edit. I would'nt have choosen the colour scheme though!

The top tube is one reason I didn't get a CR1 - my knees kept knocking the top tube (which is very wide)! I may have narrow hips though but it was pretty annoying! Brilliant bike otherwise though.
    Faster than a tent.......
  • Good stuff - some great feedback - im sure if the frames weren't strong then you would here about people doing the Paris-Roubaix on them! thanks

Went from a Trek 1.5 compact (2010) to a Basso Astra carbon frame that has been built to my spec. The difference is easily noticeable even at my crappy standard. It's far more responsive than the Trek but we are talking lots more money for the Basso build.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
