Where to find cycling partners?

Does anybody know where it's possible to find cyclists in your area or other areas of the UK where you may be cycling who might like to join you for a ride? I mean like cycle networking sites that aim to bring cyclists together for rides. I've cycled for quite some time but only recently started doing longer distance road cycling - I've started a cycling blog also for anyone who may be interested:

You mean something like a cycling club?
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

I think Rapha have an Iphone app that puts cyclists in touch with each other?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Tough one this. After a year of riding alone, I put a post in the Sportives section of this forum. You'll get the usual snidey remarks about joining a cycle club, but this may well be the exact opposite of what you want. My situation was that I had to ride 10 miles to do 60 fast miles then rise 10 miles home. All I wanted was a blast around with a couple of pints at the end. It can be found, but you'll just have to ask around a bit... and probably not here.

You need to let us know where you live and what sort of riding you want to do. Judging from your blog, you're riding an MTB on rides of about 20 odd miles so a race orientated cycle club may not be the thing for you. There are plenty of non-race, social cycle clubs in and around London though. Do you live in London?

If you don't have any joy here, or finding a local cycling club, nip over to CycleChat and check out the 'CC & Informal Rides and Events' sub-forum. There are lots of us organising rides there. So far, I've met over 60 friendly cyclists from 17 to 60+, and abilities ranging from beginner to super-fit.
  • At the moment I'm cycling around the Yorkshire area, with Bradford to Haworth and Wycoller then back via Haworth to Keighley penned in, and looking at doing Sheffield to Edale via Glossop next month. I'm looking at cycle rides of between roughly 20 - 30 miles with a view to improve (I'm hoping to get a better bike by September). I like a bit of road cycling but also some off road (not heavy mountain biking, with stunts, twists and turns etc.). I'll have a look at that Cycle chat forum, so thanks for that.

Whilst the majority of people in this thread of the forum are usually very inclusive and helpful I think it is a very short step from encouraging beginner to "I'm better than you" rider.

I am not sure if that is generally what cyclists turn into?

Was going on a blast of about 25 miles last night to test out my new SPD setup. Was about 3 miles in and just cruising until I got to the rural roads I wanted to be on.

Turned my head to spit - yes unfortunately I need to do that - but goes on the road - and I noticed some muppet full out in his drops racing as if he had to get to a birth coming up on the outside.

I caught up to him and was basically riding really slowly just behind him.

We got to a roundabout and I asked him why he had done that. He just ignored me and blasted off. I smiled to myself.

Caught up to him when I wanted, told him to catch up - seeing that he got off on overtaking me.

He just sat there at about 10MPH!

The thing was he was the ideal size and weight for a cyclist - probably about 5'5 and 9 stone - yet he overtook for no reason and then didn't want a race. Weird!...

Might have been doing intevals? Overtook you on the work part of it then was on rest section when you caught him again?
  • Thanks for that website vorsprung, it seems very interesting and useful :). I've signed up to the forum there as well, seems very much up my street.

Thanks for that - need to get some miles in my legs but will keep an eye on threads there. Pennine area is my stomping ground as well so need to get used to hills!

I'm only just over the hill (in both senses!) in Hebden Bridge and quite a lot of the rides start from here! We might be doing one from north Leeds in the next month or so (it depends on when the lad organising it can get a weekend off work).
