A bit early, but it's been on my mind, 'intermediate' tyres.

I'm looking to ride right through the year, and so have been putting together a 'hack'.

I'll never go out in the lashing rain, but drizzle/damp/standing water/cold, I hope won't put me off.

So if I were an F1 car, I'd say I'll be after a set of intermediate tyres.

But which ones?

My Choice, Maxxis Advantage Front, High Roller Rear - even better in Exception 62A for both!

  • No need on a bike a slick tyre offers the most grip in ALL conditions.

You are basically riding on a contact patch the size of your thumbnail. Not enough time (or weight) to move the water

The problem where I live in the country is not grip, its having something which is puncture proof once the rain starts to wash much more grit onto the roads, and thefarmers leave mud and stones on the road. As "intermediates" I use Durano Plus.

I do go out in the lashing rain. It is a mentality that I learned from football (as in, if it's raining the kick off doesn't get delayed because one or two don't fancy it). I haven't had a problem with my road tyres (Spesh All Condition2, Krylion Carbon and GP4000s) I just take it a bit easier on the corners, brake a bit earlier and look out for manhole covers/painted surfaces, I also look forward to big fat hot baths at the end.

I agree, I'm more after strength and toughness, the 'spare' Pro Race 3's I'm currently running on my hack aren't going to last 5 minutes on the road with all the cack left on it after a downpour.

I use Continental GatorSkin HardShell tyres and after 1500 miles I have had no P issues so far, they have cut up a little but I give them a check for any embedded objects before each ride. I always inflate them to 120 psi before each ride as well.

    So far so good.
