STI front shifter issue

Missus has just brought a new bike, came today, front derailuer cable was disconnected, I connected the cable, but the shifter doesn't seem to "ratchet" the cable, just moves and returns without any ratchet noise, hence it won't pull the derailuer up.

Am I missing something?, or is the shifter broken?, its a Tiagra shifter pulling a Sora front mech

  • The ratcheting will work regardless of whether the cable's connected or not (well, it does on my Ultegra 6500). My guess is it's knacked - arrange a replacement.

Has the lever returned to the small ring position and is the cable nipple located correctly. If yes to both then it is probably a u/s shifter.

Yes, well, I think it has, I've shifted the inner lever, is the nipple correctly?, I don't know, how would I check?.

I am useless when it comes to the mechanics of bikes, I just ride the damn things!!!!

Shifting the lever will not always return the ratchet without a cable pulling it. If you pull the brake on you should be able to see into the cable groove.

Right, so the cable needs tension to return the ratchet?, I'll have a look in the morning, thanks
