I got one as a prezzy for my 50th birthday. I do a fine job of falling off regularly and recently managed my record distance of 276 mm.

The Headmaster at the local school decided tio take it up to amuse the pupils and encouraged them to get involved too. There is now quiet a large community of unicyclists on the Black Isle - some of the kids have even commuted from Culbokie to Fortrose by unicycle for charity - this involves a considerable climb! Well done to them - I shall focus on breaking to 300 mm barrier for now.

You'd have to cycle backwards on that one to go forwards. Adds a little bit more of a challenge

The lap record wouldn't count, it's only 6 kg, so is under the UCI limit.

I think the cruising speed of a 24" wheeled unicycle is around 10mph. Have read of some people hitting 20+ on 36" wheeled ones.

Assuming it 24" diameter without a tyre assuming tyre is one inch wide, that's 26inch. Radius is Pi x Diameter so 81.68" per revolution.

63360" in a mile so = 775.71 revolutions per mile
    10 mile per hour = 7757.1 revolutions per hour = 129.28 rpm!
10 Miles an hour round Richmond park would take 41.4 mins

So could you maintain 130rpm for 42 mins? If not you will be a fair bit slower.

I'll have to try again with mine. I think the saying about old dogs and new tricks may apply. If successful we could try for a lap of the Park. We might have to stop at every pub near a gate to keep energy levels up.
Keep us posted on how you get on.

I'd also imagine Dark Hill would be "interesting" and assuming you make it up there Broomfield should be an even bigger test of your control :-D

No brake on the one he's just ordered. Apart from the fact it's fixed gear

    Oh dagnabbit.

    You got me.

    Ordered.

    Bugger.

I foresee some time in the park, on soft grass, wearing full motorcycle protective gear.

Man I am going to look like a pillock - what was that 'fear death' thread?

MTFU. I've been practising on the street! Most of the time I've gone off forwards so land on my feet :-) If anything it's easier to practice against/near a wall to get your balance first then push off and see how you go!

Ha! Actually I was joking. A couple of large empty office suites in my building (basketball court sized) to which I have the keys. :-)

MrsAH "You have to work late again?"
    Me "Uhuh"
MrsAH "You're a salesman, why do you need kneepads to work late?"

MrsAH "Are you having an affair?"

No WAY I'm admitting to having bought it to her until I can nonchalantly ride it 8)

Shin pads. I normally land on my feet, but caught my shins as the bastard thing jumped up to get me.

I met these guys earlier this year at a festival

    http://www.youtube.com/user/Voodoounicycles

They tried to teach me and my son how to uni-cycle.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

We moved house in November, and the last night we were in Stoke Newington we were walking up Church Street to a restaurant to celebrate the impending move, and my missus turned to me and said "it's going to be different in Cobham isn't it?". At that very moment a bloke dressed as a (very scruffy) magician rode past on a unicycle. We were gobsmacked at the timing.

He was pretty good too, no problems as we watched him ride 50m down the road.

Me in a meeting in Country today

    Mobile goes

"terribly sorry, I thought this was off, hello?"

    Girl from my office
"just calling to tell you that a unicycle has arrived for you in reception, were you expecting a unicycle?"

    Me
    "yes, yes I was"

    Girl from my office
    "I worry about you sometimes"

 Wonder where mines got too. Bottles of beer in the fridge ready (to relax myself, and cushion the landings). Hopefully arrived - time to call the missus and find out.

This HARD. Have previously mentioned that my sense of balance is akin to that of a flamingo on skunk but the ceiling of my workshop is like a jungle gym so I thought the baby steps would be easy.

    No. No they are not.

The worst thing so far is not the falling off but the crotch friction. Lycra is going to be needed, along with lube.

Should help with the trackstanding though!

Seriously though?? WTF?? Thats one hell of an 'athletes TT'

There's a guy who commutes around Nottingham on one. See him mostly near Beeston/Bramcote area at the side of the A52. He rides it as well as I ride my riad bike, and probably quicker too.

I managed a couple of centimetres before decking it. Decided I need to find a deserted park where i cannot be seen unitl I have mastered it.

Warning JZED the ankle facing side of the cranks have no chamber on the edges. They are perfect ankle bone skin strippers - do not learn wearing trainers with no socks.
