Best places to ride in New Zealand?!?
I'm heading to New Zealand next saturday and i'm definately taking some of my riding gear (not my bike unfortunately) Just wondering if anyone has been and knows of the best places to ride? i've heard there are some good rides around Lake Taupo and Rotoura. I'm spending 6 weeks out there and starting in Auckland heading all the way down to Dunedin and seeing and riding as much as i can in between.
I'll update this with where i've ridden etc, when i get out there to keep you all posted! but for now any help would be much appreciated

You just need to head to Rotorua, forget the rest
seriously though there is lots of good riding all over NZ, Woodhill park in Auckland, Whaka forest in Rotorua, Crathers of the Moon in Taupo to name those at the top end of the North Island. All these offer good and varied riding in a relatively small/close area, well signposted, maintained and close to civilisation.
Then there are some day trips you can on the central plateau, the best being the 42 Traverse.
However it is our winter at the moment and from the mid part of the north island (Around Taupo) down to the bottom of the south island it is pretty much covered in snow. So the only riding you will get is north of Taupo.
Drop me a line if you want any more specific info or tips.0 -
Ahh good times
What is the bike hire like? are they actually decent bikes you can hire, iIve had a quick look online and just says the prices of hire for the day but not what bikes you can actually get with that.0 -
I can only speak for Rotorua and I have never hired a bike here, at the Whaka forest there is a company called Planet Bike who hire out bikes. I think they are all hardtails and seem to be a mix of GT and Scott. Never really looked at them so cannot say what condition they would be in.
In town I know Bike Vegas hires bikes but I am not sure what they hire out, they are stockists for Lapierre, Kona and Merida so possibly something from those manufacturers.0 -
Whaka forest in Rotorua is great. Made sure I shoe-horned a days riding in there when we were out visiting the bro-in-law in February. Planet Bikes have a mobile hire facility at the car park but they're pretty basic (think GT Aggressor 1, Spesh Hardrock & similar).
The trails are really good but one thing to be aware of: the trail grading system goes:
green (easiest)
red
blue
black
Took my bro-in-law on a blue run after warming him up on a few greens thinking the grading system was the same as the UK. Ooops...
