The biggest question is, do you care what he thinks?

I've found that most people who laugh, don't ride and barely do anything sporty/fitness wise.

The attitude of people who have to posture in that way to confirm their masculinity - they are clearly insecure.

If they don't cycle then their opinion is irrelevant.

  • Lycra is to cycling as football kit is to football, simple as that. It's the appropriate attire for maximum performance, see to any of the naysayers play 90mins in Doc Martins and Jeans because they think Rooney is a Gimp for wearing shin pads and shorts.

    Does lycra look silly?
Certainly not if you you're slim, proportionally built, you have ripped arms and legs, nice tan, straight flat back when on drops and you normally spin smoothly at 100 rpm.

Sorry to burst your bubble but it doesn't matter what you can do or even if your name is Cadel Evans, you still look bloody stupid in lycra, but it is aerodynamically efficient and that is why we wear it, and that is all you need to tell the doubters

I'm a bus driver by trade and I'm sure you can guess the average 'stature'of me and my colleagues. To give you an idea, I'm 5ft5 and wear 2xl bibs and jersey. Bottom line: I don't give a crap what others think or feel is offensive to the eyes. The point is I feel good when riding in the gear and this encourages me to ride 'for the hell of it'.

Tell him to join you on a ride, in jeans and a shirt and see if he still thinks Lycra as daft afterwards :D

You won't look daft in it, as it's somewhat expected on a roadbike. You will look a little daft if you wear it to go to Sainsburys though !!

Just jam half the fruit bowl down the front of your lycra shorts then see what the doubters say... (make sure it doesn't shift to the rear of the shorts, or else the illusion is somewhat shattered)

Go for a nice long ride with your mate (preferably on a nice warm day) get to the top of a big climb and then compare.
Your lycra will still look fresh and the sweat will be wicking away. Your mate will have sweat stains down his back, under his arms, etc which will not feel pleasent . I'm sure that the soggy crotch won't be very comfortable either.

We wear technical clothing for a reason.
  • Wait til you tell them you shave your legs

or rub chamois cream under your balls...

I did this once, but got some funny looks.....had to throw the pineapple away in the end!
  • I swore to myself that despite just getting my first road bike, that I was going to stick with my MTB baggies... Took my new bike out for it's first blast on Saturday, did a very sedate 26 miles and the first thing I did after I got home and cleaned both myself and the bike was to get on the internets and order me some new shorts! I tell you, my seat bones were shocked!

Had a road bike for 3 days now and already wear Lycra on it, MTB is baggies (with Lycra underneath..... Shhhhh). Used to call road cyclists MAMIL's Middle Aged Men In Lycra and laugh..... Happy to be one now.

I think lycra got a bad name because some people used to walk around the streets wearing cycling shorts as a fashion item in the 80s. Sports clothing is for wearing while participating in a sport.

Overweight middle aged men who couldn't kick a cow in the ar$e if they were holding by the tail wearing football strips or tracksuits look way more ridiculous than anyone fat or thin sat on a bike wearing lycra.

after a while you forget about it and end up wearing it in the pub, at parent teacher meetings etc or is that just me?

Used to swear I'd never wear it when I started road biking...then I used to wear it under shorts...I then lost all the weight that was making me self concious and now I never leave home on a road bike without it :) Don't care what people say really, plus I'm cultivating my tan lines!
