I much prefer to carry bikes inside the vehicle if possible. We even managed to get our tandem inside our Skoda Favorit estate by dropping the front wheel out and putting it in backwards with the rear wheel between the front seats.

However, if that's not possible a rear mounted rack is probably better for a couple of reasons: first, it more efficient with less drag and hence better fuel economy: second, I've heard of several people who've forgotten the bike's on the roof and tried to drive under height barriers or low canopies etc with obvious sad results. Mind you, if we had an Astra van the bikes would definitely be inside it.

We carry our singles on a rack at the back of our campervan with the tandem inside. We like the options of going out on singles when on a trip.
Old cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster

Inside the van has to be the best surely?!

Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

now, i drive an astra van for work, and space can be very tight. It involves removing the seatpost to let the bike stand up with the front wheel off. Whether this is worth it, it's up to the OP.

But imo, a towbar mounted rack is best. thule 9503, or euroway dependant on budget.
