I was always under the impression that SRAM shifters only work with front Shimano derailleurs, can anyone confirm this as this video shows the M980 working very slick on XO shifters, if the 10 speed versions work well, could I use the 9 speed with my M972?

As far as i know it will not work due to the different shifting ratio's, sram works on a 1>1 basis and shimano is 2>1.

Read the blurb on the video "custom Mod II shifters with new indexing", SRAM and Shimano are not compatible, and neither are either companies 9/10 speed items.
  • Thats what I thought kdawg but looking at the video.........Im not too sure now as the mech will only move as far as the cable allows, its the shifters that are indexed not the mech, if this is the case I wouldnt mind getting some 9sp XO shifters and trying this as they are far slicker than my shimano

Ahh so he has faffed about with them, pity shimano dont sell something like those
  • Just done some googling and found SRAM do a 2:1 for shimano but the quality isnt as good as XO ..........the ATTACK looks a bit tacky really

Indexing has nothing to do with the mechs, you're right. But... the movement of the mechs is different: i.e. the pivots are placed differently, so the movement is not the same and will only work when mated to a shifter that pulls exactly the right amount of cable.
  • Thanks for the advice everyone.........I just thought that shifting looked very smooth and slick so fancied some but looks like Im sticking to my shifters

and that info is for the 9spd and below. 10spd is another whole world of pain.

Aye no one does a 'proper' 10 speed Grip Shift, there's various companies out there doing bodges though!
