Maybe it charges it too if you have a 3.5mm jack to phono running from your stereo? any other reason would be totally pointless like you said!0

La base Dock produce la línea de audio de nivel que proporcione una mejor calidad de sonido, y después utilizando el conector de auriculares del iPod
It seems It's in very bad spanish (I'm portuguese, not spanish) but says something like this:
"The docking station produces a better sound quality than by using IPods headphone jack".
It seems it improves audio quality and maybe it allows you to use two set of headphones at the same time. Teenagers always liked this for sharing music with their "bffs". :P0 -
