Killer, Monster, Madness: Deterrent or attraction?

Monster
Beast
Corker
Rumble
Killer
Etape du ???
Mayhem
Madness
etc etc

1. Do these sort of strap lines the titles of events attract or deter you from entering a sportive?
2. Do the images and semiotics associated with these types of hard events encourage your participation?

So what do you think?

I was thinking about this recently. I mean if you're new to bikeling then presumably you've got a bike that's geared to your newbie legs. I really can't see the point of making a sportive that requires monies to be spent buying new gearing.

And for regular i.e fitter riders the promise of a monster/killer ride is pretty difficult to live up to unless you run a continental spotive.

But I dare say they will attract some and deter others.

Personally I like the tongue in cheek ones, the Tour de Staveleys and etape du dales.
The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.

I think they should beef up the names ever more.

'Death mountain extreme mega pro newbie death' or 'Massive f*cking hills all the way round'
