Genesis Croix de Fer bottom bracket issues

Hey,

I have owned a genesis croix de fer for about 3 months now. Purchased it from Edinburgh Cycle Co-op.

After two or three weeks the bottom bracket started clicking / ticking badly, so it went straight back to shop and they replaced the bracket, saying that it had been torqued so much @ the factory it had damaged the plastic assembly inside the frame.

All good for a few weeks, then the noise came back. So, back it went. They then fitted a 105 5700 bracket and re-faced the frame. After riding it for 20 miles, the dreaded clicking and ticking started again.

It only does it when pressure is applied, and it isn't the seat post or chain ring bolts. It is definitely coming from the bracket.

I am at my wits end with and am considering throwing the bike through the shop window ! So its going back again. Another wierd thing is, is that I have a friend who bought a croix de fer two months ago, and he has exactly the ame problem. He's has two new brackets in and still the noise returns.

Anybody heard of any known issues / problems relating to this? Anyone else experienced the same problems? I am considering fitting a hope steel bearing in there. I am betting this will shut the damn noise up!

Even though you seem very confident that the BB is at fault, I'd be thinking that it's probably not the BB if you've replaced it so many times. Clicking/creaking in the crankshaft area can be a nightmare to trace. Have you tried changing pedals? Are you sure it's not something really daft, like the front derailleur cable striking the crank? It could also be related to the rear wheel or chain.

Well, each time the bearing has been replaced, the noise does stop - for a while.
So this must mean it is something in the crankshaft area, otherwise it would continue, irregardless of BBs being changed.

The chainrings bolts are tight, the BB shells are on tight, the gear wire on the front derailleur is not contacting anything. The links in the chain are all good, no stiff ones.

If it were the pedals - again, it would continue constantly, irregardless of the BB being swapped out, and these pedals have been on a previous racing bike and they were silent.

    It's infuriating.

Remove, grease and replace the cranks. Does this silence it? If so, it's not the BB.

The cranks will have been off each time the BB was changed, and they should really be checked / re-torqued after a few hundred miles.

Had to do this periodically on my mtb. The sealed cartridge BB was still going strong when the bike was nicked after 13 years!

The bike is virtually new - only has 300 miles on it, the cranks are all tightly bolted on and in mint condition. Because its a hollowtech II, the cranks are integrated with the spindle. I have dismantled, re-greased and cleasned the whole assemly, only for the noise to come back.

The only thing I am thinking could be an issue, is the lack of spacers between the BB and frame, but the 105 assembly pdf from shimano for the 5700 model doesn't include spacers.......

There are no spacers with a HT2 double chainset. (there's one each side for a triple)

Is there any play in the crankset? ie can you pull / push the thing sideways at all?

Did you correctly preload the bearings by tightening the plastic crank end cap before tightening the pinch bolts? Did you tighten the pinch bolts alternately / repeatedly till they were both at the correct torque? (It's always amazing how much tightening one bolt can loosen the other)

Well the LBS did all the work, so I have to assume they know what they are doing.

I've now purchased a Hope steel BB and I shall be fitting it over next few days.
    Fingers crossed.
  • I had the over-torqued factory issue myself. The internals were mashed up and broke/tore when I tapped out the cups. Really annoying as it meant buying a new BB.

So I bought a new Tiagra BB and put it in myself. Unfortunately, for you, it's been fine since. Currently in Asia, having done 8,000km on it.

Hmm not always a good assumption .... did you get this sorted out btw?

Let us know how you find the Hope BB. Does is contain any nasty plastic load bearing parts like Shimano & KCNC press-fit BB90s ? (the source of many BB probs I think).
  • I have a 2013 Genesis Croix de Fer and I have had 4 new bottom brackets as they keep coming loose. The last one, a Shimano Tiagra was fitted in July 2015 and since then I have done 4,790 miles on it.

I noticed today, that it is loose again, so it is going in for it's 5th bottom bracket! How did this bike get around the world?
