I listen to the Mark Kermode film reviews on 5Live on Fridays. In this set up Kermode is the exepert and Mayo is representing the layman. Mayo manages this role without coming across like someone who's never set foot in a cinema, unlike Richardson.

That's because it's radio. It has a different audience to television. Therefore, dynamics are different.

    It's also not sports broadcasting.

    You are correct on that score. Here is Exhibit A;

Kelly and Robert Millar would be a formidable duo behind the mike. There would be a lot of dead air but you can be sure that whenever one of them said something, it would be right on the money. They'd probably be very funny too, if Millar's old Cyclesport column is anything to go by.

  • I tend to switch between channels, the ads are so frequent like other posts I'm sick of Boardman adverts so when they come on I hop to 410, then its SK and co, adverts, back to 120....
I do truly appreciate that this is a man who has done it, and for that his knowledge is formidable, yet on the other channel there's a total novice in every way who loves to talk?
But then in so many walks of life those that can bulls**t and know nothing often get the best jobs so why should this be different? SK fairly bucks the trend...but.......
It'd be good to have the "average" and someone clear and easy to understand, enthusiastic who knows what they're on about, surely that's not too tall an order?
(Why not have it in French or Spanish and subtitle it if the job can't be filled by a first language English speaker....?)

Thing is they are mostly commentating to the uninitiated especially during the Tour. Just 'cos some of us have been following for a while then we should just accept that not everyone has and see it as a benefit that more people are watching Eurosport because more figures mean more races being shown and for longer periods (which has been happening - in the last years (quote S Kelly). Also D Harnonious has to keep repeating because the producers are going to 'cut and shuts (quote D Duffield) for the highlights.
    Swings and roundabouts boys.

Personally I love SK's commentary on Euro. Wouldn't be the same without him and the rest of the crew. Loved today's guest appearance from Prof Brian Cox too

    "Torty"?
What exactly is the veteran Sean Kelly saying? Ok he's a former pro, but get someone who can speak English to an acceptable level, I'm Scottish and even I can't make out half the guff he spouts.
Emotionless commentary that sounds like something from Channel 4(HORSE) racing.
Makes that porky scouse lad flogging the Apollos on ITV4 seem intelligible.....:lol::lol:

And I wondered why he was speaking english and being dubbed rather than speaking french (which he does more than passably well). Now I know - it was for you lot. Next time he can speak french for me and be dubbed comprehensibly for the anglophones.

We have Virenque and Durand on french Eurosport - worlds better than Jalabert and Polo on France 2 (and useful after stage comments from a certain Philippe Gilbert who is already preparing his life after race retirement and doing it very well)

With ITV4 you get the commentators talking about 'Laopard Trek'. What's that all about?
Believe the team put out a press release asking for it to be pronounced that way.

And David Harmon said we'll not be having any of that nonsense
