I`m relatively new to road cycling but enjoying it none the less. I`m looking to spend approximately £1000, I`ve narrowed it to the ones listed below but I`m reluctant to take the plunge without getting some expert guidance first so here goes.

Canyon Roadlite 7.0

http://www.canyon.com/_uk/roadbikes/bike.html?b=2106

Pros

+ Lightweight very light weight
+ Ultegra group set
+ Decent wheels for the money

Cons

- Direct sales model, The first time I see the bike will be when it turns up

Cube Attempt

Pros
+Great Frame
+Great Wheels
+Good Groupset
Cons
- None I can see although not as light as the Canyon

Pinarello FP1 (Evans will price match as I have found it cheaper)

Pros
+ Looks great
+ 105 Groupset
Cons
- Wheels are cheap
-Paying for the name ?

Planet X and BOARDMAN full carbons are offering me the wild cards

So far though the Canyon Roadlite 7.0 is taking it for me.

Can you offer your thoughts ?

  • You can't buy a bike blind ... you need to sit on it and ride it and see how it fits.

Get yourself down to a few local bike shops and see what they have in your price range and RIDE them. What seems perfect on paper sometimes isn't it reality.

Also, do you NEED to buy your road bike now? If you wait a few more weeks (usually Aug time ish), they start bringing out next years models so all the 2011 ones will be significantly reduced so a good time to buy!

local bike shop is JE James really like one a CUBE peleton, but it only comes with a triple and I really want a compact.

I dont "have" to have it now just thought it would be good to eek as much use as poss, this year.

I knwo what your saying about the CANYON, but I could send it back if its not right, you have to agree for a little over a £1000 its a stonking good bike !

    Hi squirt,

If you're fairly new to road bikes, as was said before, ideally try and get a test ride and bike fit if at all possible. Also agree that if you can wait you'll save yourself money on a 2011 bike once the 2012 bikes come out in September.

As to the bikes; the Cube Attempt is Cycling+ £1000 bike of the year this year. Canyon make great bikes though and they do have the on-line bike fit calculator. If you go that route then make sure you measure yourself really accurately and if you have any doubt ring them!

Yes you do pay a bit for the Pinarello name, but I agree they look good. Try and test ride as many as possible then buy the most comfortable one that you thinks looks the biz! Everyone knows that good looking bikes go faster!

    Regards, EarlyGo

If anyone has any other suggestions please post them up
  • Expert guidance will come from a reputable bike shop.

Go and sit on or try the Cube, there are plenty of dealers.

The Canyon looks great and is very light but there seems to be a 5 week wait for them to be built. CR doesn't seem to have stock of middle sizes of Cube. I personally don't like the look of the Pinarello.

I would also consider the Focus Cayo 105 Ltd from Wiggle, currently available for £880 with tour20 code or the Ultegra model for £1200. Both are full carbon.

The Boardman Team (alu) for £999 is also a nice looking bike and quite light at 8.5kg.

Ribble Grand Fondo is another to consider.
  • The Pinarello weighs 13kgs!?

Personally I think the canyon looks the best
