Voodoo Hoodoo from Halfords is a good bike.
Carrera Kraken too is good.
The Fury you mention is a great bike too.
I'm new to all this and went through the same bikes as you. Some advice to you would be name your max price and try and stick to it Also what type of riding do you do or want too.
This is my thread, have a read through it, it may help you decide.

I went for the Genesis Core 50 for £1050. Went over my budget but made the right decision and can't wait for it to get here lol.
I wish you look and this is probably the best start to mountain biking you've made as this forum and the people in it are full of knowledge and are always happy to help!0 -
I have only used a hardrock out of these and it was the comp model but the frame is absolutly bomb proof. I beleive it won a test in MBUK as the fork was the most controled out of the similar priced bikes also in test.0

How do you know you made the right decision if you haven't even ridden the bike yet?"it's like a gift, you know? It's like I can't control it"0 -
Good question!
The spec, looks and price speak for them selves really. And the bike is exactly what I want in terms of what I'll be doing with it.
I tried the Boardman pro out in Halfords as that was the one I was going to get. It was the 18" frame and it was fine for me, the bike felt good. The Core is 17.5 which will be fine and the angle of the top bar is slightly more that the Pro and it's slightly shorter so gives me a little bit more room for my balls, the reach will be perfect I think. Obviously it could all go up in smoke when it gets here but I think I've done my research well and the advice from people in this forum has been very helpful!
If you or any one have any more questions please put them in my thread so we don't clog up palmer1989's thread, thanks.0 -
i own a specialised hardrock disc not the pro model.
its my first proper mountain bike and im pretty chuffed. I have a few niggles with noises and such but the ride is superb, the weight is lovely and it feels very sturdy even with my 15 stone on it.
i too tried most bikes in halfords in their ranges and preferred the specialised feel. i certainly wouldnt have thought youd be disappointed i use mine every day and have covered 400+ miles in 8 weeks with no major issues!0 -
Am very happy with my 2010 Hardrock sport disc as my first "proper" mountain bike. As previously mentioned the frame is bombproof and for the money its a reasonable spec. My only gripe was with the stock tyres that kept puncturing just riding on loose gravel / canal paths.0

The Fury and Rockrider are by far the best bikes for this money.0

Yep, I'd second that, my fury is fab!2011 Carrera Fury
