Loose cranks

Been having some issues lately, first with a set of slx, and now with some saint cranks. Both have been coming loose throughout rides with the non drive side crank loosening off.

Both sets are a couple of years old, bottom bracket is fairly new and there is a new locking bolt on there after the old one fell off and got lost when the crank arm fell off.

Worth saving or are they just dead?

what locking bolt? they dont have any.

are you tightening the pinch bolts up to correctly after having set the preload?

do you have the retainer fitted?

And is the crank axle thoroughly tapped through the frame before fitting the non driveside?

Sorry meant the preload bolt not locking bolt, what retainer?

Pretty sure the axle is tapped all the way through.

Is the preload bolt done up to the correct torque (don't over tighten as is can damage the bearings) and check the pink bolts at the base of the crank arm.

Ah that retainer, that wee bit of plastic perished a long time ago, checked splines on slx they seem ok on axle and arm

Something has to be amiss - there is no way the HTII cranksets should be able to work loose under any riding conditions if fitted correctly.

Are you using a torque wrench to tighten the pinch bolts, I bet your not.

If you do, please accept my apologies and torque them equally in stages 4, 8, 12,14 Nm, don't just wack em straight up to 14Nm.

I can't think of any other explanation other than you've overtightened them at some point or are not tightening them up enough!
  • I could very well be wrong to do this but I like to put a drop of thread-locking solution on the threads before tightening them and I've had no problems of this kind since I first did.
