advice re chain set

I was at Dalby today and when i was on the smallest cog on the front and pushing hard up hills then chain kept jamming between the frame and the front derailleur. If i turned the pedal backwards then the chain would drop back okay but this would happen again and again. When watching the rear derailleur when biking i could see it flicking forward until it eventually would fully extend towards the front chainset and the chain then would jam as explained.
Looking at the small ring of teeth on the chainset it lloks like some of the teeth have lost shape and no longer to a point but rounded off through wear. Basically would this be the reason the chain is getting jammed, would it be because as the chain goes round the teeth its not getting released on the rounded ones.
Sorry for the long winded question.

I have an old Specialized Hardrock its about 7yrs old. Is the chainset worth changing on this if it needs chain, chainset etc
Thanks Lee0 -
