Scratched stanchion - can it be fixed?

Hi,
I have a tora sl on my bike and this weekend I stupidly put my bike on somebody's boot mounted rack (i have always hated them because they scratch your bike) and unsurprisingly by fork has been scratched quite badly across the stanchion.
I am a bit clueless when it comes to forks but I think the stanchions are stainless steel as they are shiny silver like polished stainless.
Can I lightly wet n' dry the scratches off the fork or will that ruin them? What is the best remedy?
Advice would be greatly appreciated!

have a look in the FAQs."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
