I'm looking for a pair of good winter tyres fir my road bike, I have been looking at continental gatorskins but I'm not sure what else is available. Had problems in the past with front wheel washouts, so some shoulder grip would be an advantage.

If your front wheel is going to go, then no tyre on the planet will stop it. I use Pro Race 3's and GP4000S's all year round and don;t really have any problems.
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

Conti GP4 Seasons or if you want something bomb-proof - Schwalbe Marathon Plus. Whatever you do, don't buy Specialized Armadillos, unless you enjoy the feeling of wooden wheels and little grip in the wet.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

You'll have to make a compromise between grip and resistance to cutting up (black chilli compund is about the closest you can get to not having to compromise but IME it's not as good as some soft compounds). Personally I use my normal Schwalbe Ultremo's over winter until the wear out or cut up too much and then switch to Ultremo DD's for a bit more protection. You can't beat them for grip but the tread will cut up in winter debris.

Schwalbe Durano here or the Durano Plus if you don't mind the extra rolling resistance.
  • I found Vittoria Rubino Pro's to be very good on the commute. Roll pretty well, good puncture resistance and grippy in the wet. (much better than Conti gatorskins and Spesh Armadillo). Make sure you order them up in 25mm..
  • Fuckin hell, its July

I know. I had a bloody Xmas catalogue in the post this morning!

Oh and Michelin Carbon Krylions. Just make sure you take the afternoon off to fit them.

I've got them on my commuter and been running them for about a year, very happy, good grip, extremely puncture resisitant as not yet had one and I would personally recommend them. I also have GP4000's but its too early for me to comment on the performance of those, but so far i'm happy, both seem to roll about the same to me.

I once went 2 years without a puncture on Conti GP 4 Seasons, 3 sets – got about 6000 miles out of each pair. I tried Rubino Pros and found them so slippy that my back wheel was spinning on steep hills. I have Pro Race 3s on my race bike any the grip is amazing but they wear out quickly. For longevity I’d got for the Contis.
  • I am currently running GP4000 and found them a good step up from Gatorskins which were a huge leap up from Armadillos. I hated the Armadillos as they killed the feel o the bike.

Michelin are about to release the ProRace 4s, named the Pro4 range, and one of the models, the Endurance is set to replace their krylion carbons, interesting .....
