hi, ive just completed my first ever century ride event with the total distance of 168km in 6 hours 17 minutes a bit over in the organizers 6 hour time limit. this is my first ever long distance ride. normally i just ride between 80-100km the max. and here are two of the 'gifts' that i got :

saddle sores :- i got it after the third hour of the ride (about 120km or so), really makes me so uncomfortable.
knee pain :- i got it during the fifth hour in to the ride (about 150km or so), makes me pedaling only in light gear.

other than that i just experience only minimal neck and back pains, which is still ok...

so what did i go wrong here? cycling gurus please help... :D

    Your first 120km was pretty quick ! 3hrs at a steady 25mph !

Thats a strong pace for your first century.. Bloody hell

Riding for 6 hrs for the first time on a bike is going to hurt a bit. I'd not worry about it. Rest up that knee for a day or two and it should be ok.

Irrespective of the time, that's a very respectable distance - well done!

when you say "the organisers"! - was this a structured ride or event or something? what sort of terrain?

well done with either! - in four years since revisiting cycling, the most I have done is 70miles - still need to break that 100! - although I am registered for the manchester100 in september so should be then!!

Well done on your first century.
Saddle sore is all about fit and preperation. If you have the wrong saddle/shorts or your saddle is too high it can cause it. On the day use a good cream to prepare for it, I use Sudocrem.
Knee pain could be a whole load of causes. Past injuries, poor fit on bike, overuse of high gears. If you get it again try and think about what you have been doing during the ride, if it's not something obvious then it might be bike fit related.

    Well done on the century.

My first was earlier in the year and I was used to 65 - 70 ish miles and had few issues. I found that once I got to around 85-90 miles I had aches and pains in places I didn't know you could get them! In my case, my right ankle hurt a lot, and the soles of my feet. Weird. Felt fine after a night's kip. Oddly enough, it's made me think more about longer distance riding and tackling some distance events.

What about you? Ticked the box and "never again" or inspired?
