so, i want to buy a camera for my bird for her birthday
i want a dslr with a normal lens (like an 18-55mm) and a zoom lens (like a 55-250mm ish)
i have a budget of about 800 quid and our preliminary research shows that she likes canons and particularly the 550d.
so, is the 550d any good and for the monies im trying to spend is there owt betterer.

If you get the Canon make sure you get IS lenses as some other makes have the IS in the camera body0

Anyway, nope, Big D, you won't find a better camera than the 550D for the money.
All DSLRs in a given price range are very closely matched, performance wise. An advantage of buying one of the two big camera names, Canon, or Nikon, is that ALL new photo editing software etc will work with them.
With something like a Sony, or a Pentax, the lesser known softwares will often lag behind by a version or so before offering full support for things like RAW files.
Oh, and incidentally, you can get the camera, and 18-55 plus 55-250mm lens as a package here for a shade under £800. Fantastic camera shop, great service.

Olympus do and it is very good, mine IS failed and was repaired by olympus, but before in the time it didnt work low light was hard work0 -
Ah! I didn't know that!
(if I'm honest, I hadn't actually realised that Olympus made DSLRs  )0 -
The olympus E-620 is good and would save you some cash on some lenses at a later date

How does that save cash? I can't find it anywhere that is in any way significantly cheaper than the EOS 550 :?0

sorry i was thinking of a different model, this is a direct competitor to the 550d0
-
Go for an older model, gift wrapped
I've heard women love to have their box brownie packed
Sadly, other than that, I know nothing about cameras other than expensive cameras are better than cheap0 -

Luckily, proper photographic stuff doesn;t seem to interest hipsters, so it hasn't affected prices of proper toys.0 -
All I know about camera's is that my £50 argos special Canon is nothing like the guy at work's Canon 5d, which sucks really but then again I guess thats like comparing your £250 scott voltage to the Scale ltd
I think we should all await JoshTp's response as his trail video proves he knows his beans0 -
yeehaamcgee wrote:Gazlar wrote:Micro 4/3s cameras are more expensive than lower end DSLRs, and have all the drawbacks, and none of the advantages.
my EPL1 takes pictures or better quality than some lower end dSLR, and its smaller so i can get a away with taking it to events and working at places that a dSLR wouldnt be well received and be too intrusive social events and stuff.
Granted a 550D has extra features but is sheeps missus going to use the frames per second on his vinegar stroke, i think not.0 -

im using a micro 4 3rds camera and like it, but i still think its too big and i feel like a git walking round with it!0 -
See alas I know nothing of this, I'm very much of the category that I like a nice photo, but it's an aide memoir, not a work of art, it baffles me how you photo types get such great results but you enjoy taking nice photos and I enjoy looking at them and that's probably the best situation for all0
