A certain amount of irony

Just got back from (my first) visit to Amsterdam and must say I was impressed with the place.

It was so pleasing to see the bike being used as a (seemingly) first choice mode of transport by so many people. The irony for me though, was for a populous that obviously loves cycling it was sad to see so many "unloved" bikes. Cleaning and lubrication are obviously considered an unneccessary evil.

Great to see so many cycling and the motorists attitude to them though.

The 'unloved' bikes you mention are just our transport/ banger/ pubbike/ grocery getters. Plus, in a city like A'dam most people keep their steeds on the street so keeping them clean is not a priority. Keeping them is. Filthy bike-> less likely to get nicked. Most of us into cycling as a sport keep the pretty bikes indoors, and don't use them for everyday commuting.
And don't forgett: ALL people in A'dam are drug using stoners.. :D

It's difficult to find the motivation to clean a bike when you're whacked off your gourd !
That's why I've never taken my bike there in the past :D

The irony is that Frank never actually went there. It's just a place he likes to 'visit' during a three skinner.

I believe so, check out some of the news headlines for certain Arab countries, they have legal "gatherings" involving stoners often... >.>

I went there a few years ago, really lovely place. We only noticed the same thing about the bikes when we saw two chaps on super clean road bikes in lycra, stood out from a mile!

I went with my now ex, and its not all seedy hookers and smoke shops, as much as I tried to make it that way
