Running a single 44T chain ring up front, question?

Hi,
Can I mount a big 44T chain ring on the inside of a crank where the middle ring goes?
I only ask, as I have setup a 1x9 using the outer ring, for use on the road. It runs smoothly enough up to the mid point on the cassette, but as you get to the lower gears the angle of the chain is quite bad. I guess in reality I wont use the lower gears much, but it would be nice to have all 9 gears available if I need them.
This problem would be eased if I could mount it further in where the middle ring goes.
Can it be done?
Thanks,
Steve

yes but you may need to file the rings shoulders or if there is a gap i suggest using steel female chainring bolts.
