Have checked the last 10 pages and no one has asked this question so here it is.
I have a new xtr 9 speed crank and am planning on getting a new bike that has an slx 10 speed crank, can the xtr run trouble free?

The XTR cranks themselves will be fine, just use the rings from the SLX crank to go with the 10spd chain as these are thinner than 9spd chains.

9 speed rings are very slightly wider than 10 speed rings, They will fit a 10 speed chain but will wear it faster as they are forcing it apart very slightly, just put the SLX rings on the old crank.

Anyway the Shimano rinmgs are made of butter and your be be replacing them soon enough (recomend middleton Anodised ones)

The chainring width makes no difference as the internal width of most 9 and 10 speed chains is exactly the same - the difference in chains is thinner plates and shorter pins which makes the external width narrower. 10 speed rings are slightly closer together, about 0.4mm, but in practice is of no consequence when using 9 speed rings with 10 speed chains. Roadies have been doing it for years to save weight. But is the spacing part of the rings or the spider?
