Shock problems

Snapped the spring the other weekend and I'm trying to find a replacement.
However trying to work out what I need is causing me bother. As far as im aware its a fox van (somethingorother) and using a smallish guide I've worked out some measurements.
My shock has a 3" stroke, about 163+/-1mm free spring length. I was looking at getting a 450/500 pound spring as im a bit lardy.
Looking at Manitou springs they seem to say for '240mm shock', what does this mean?
I've tried a 500x3" Nukeproof Shockwave spring but its about 5/10mm too long and therefore I can't get it slid into the shock.
Would it be alright to use some sort of compressor to wedge it in or would this be bad news?
Sorry its a little jumbled up but my questions are in bold

you may have snapped it as the old spring was too long.
you need a Fox Van somthing or other spring.
make model and year of bike?
your weight fully kitted up?
and we can work out what you need.
or just call up Mojo on Monday and they will beable to provide exactly what you need.
the Vans were a smaller ID that most other shocks."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
