Seen that CARMOGGEDON in LA?

#CARMAGEDDON IS COMING!

This week in Los Angeles, the entire city is having a panic attack over a two-day closure of the 405 Freeway. Well, except for cyclists.

Even L.A.'s Mayor Villaraigosa is warning folks to "plan ahead, avoid the area, or stay home".

JetBlue Airlines even offered $4 non-stop flights from Burbank to Long Beach.

The city's cyclists, however, are a creative and resourceful bunch. I'm proud to be one of them.

What started out as a few jokes online among local cyclists and public transportation advocates on Twitter and Facebook, very quickly turned to action this afternoon.

As a result, this Saturday something awesome is about to happen.

The Wolfpack Hustle, one of L.A.'s most skilled and experienced cycling groups, is challenging JetBlue Airlines to a race from Burbank to Long Beach.

  • 55km= about two hours pacy riding?

Once you've factored in airport security, check in, queues, taxiing....

    Looks like the expected happened:

[UPDATED: JetBlue's flight 405 was still on the runway when riders from the Wolfpack Hustle of Los Angeles neared the end-point to win the bike versus jet race detailed below. The riders had covered 35+ miles before the aircraft had even left the ground.

The A320 took just 12 minutes to complete the flight. The cyclists had a one hour headstart over the aircraft (a reflection of how long it takes to transit through a non-international airport) but would have still won the race without this cushion.

This is a BIG result for bicycling. The cyclists took 1 hour 34 minutes, and also beat a rider on the Los Angeles Metro, who took just under two hours.

And not just for the athletic part of bicycling: part of the reason for the win was the route chosen. Much of the route was on a riverside bike path, with no stop-lights.

The aircraft and a taxi ride to the end point took 2 hours 54 minutes.

    Carmageddon?

Sounds like a load of media hype OR did all the publicity have the desird effect and get people to change their motor centred behaviour?
