Aiming for 10,000 miles this year, but do I only count miles on the road? Do I add the turbo miles? What about miles on the stationary bike in the gym?

Surely that's entirely up to you. I'm not sure anyone else cares if you do it or not.

(Probably not though - no wind in the gym)

Divide by 6 multiply by 5 deduct the number you first thought of.

yes - because they are genuine miles (in a way) as you don't freewheel. This is maybe why at least two national coaches whose work I have read recommend that if you have to do turbo miles instead of road miles then do about 2/3 as 'far'.

Not sure I understand this. Are you riding 10000 miles? Or just covering them in some vague, "I would have done the mileage if it was oudoors", kind of way?

Is this like those people you see in shopping centres on rowing machines "crossing the atlantic"?

Only if you are in full kit
  • I did 8,000 miles (all on the road) last year, so 10,000 miles this year seemed like a good training target. I've been working on increasing my cadence, and the gym bike has helped make 90rpm feel "natural" the way that 75 or so felt "natural" 12 months ago.

Somewhere deep in my psyche miles on the the turbo feel "real" but miles on the gym bike don't. Now I know why - not wearing lycra! Will mend my ways on my next visit (but presumably wearing Rapha would mean I have to subtract the miles instead :D )

What about a pedalo on holiday? I went all the way out to the big rock and back.

That only counts if it was against the tide.

On the Commuting Stats board (link below) we specifically exclude turbo + roller miles. That's us tho; it's your choice in the end.

I count them - 20 miles for an hour on the turbo - up to you though.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

Really? Next you're going to tell me that my turbo miles only count if I engage the roller...

+1... I'm pretty sure no one but yourself really cares how many miles you do or what gym work you do, other than just casual conversation. If you what to do 10,000 miles, great, but it doesn't generally affect other peoples worlds. Do it for yourself.
