  • For up to £1k you should easily get something well worthy of a first bike.

Probably looking at an Alu frame with carbon forks and mostly Shimano 105 groupset (or equivalent). I'd say the Boardman Team is a very good buy.

On the other hand, a quick look around may get even more. A mate of mine has just got a 2010 Boardman Team Carbon for £999 as they are pushing to get rid of them. Might be worth a trip into Halfords to ask if they have any stock anywhere near you...

    Decathlon Btwin Facet 3?

    Carbon
    Shimano 105
    £899
Looks a lot better in the flesh and feels like a really nice bike, although my only experience of riding one is round the store in Nottingham!

I can't think of anything with a spec that good for the money.

What about ebay, i got a Ribble Gran Fondo this week, spec'ed at £1200 on website for about 2/3's of that price, and its basically new, theres lots of bikes on there which people have bought and never used in ernest or if it has to be new the Focus Cayo 105 on wiggle for £880 looks the steal deal, you just type in tour20 in the discount box and it ends up at £880, bargain me thinks
