can someone tell me what these are? I hope they are just the wear indicators but why are they holes! both the Conti GP4000s tyres have them. Only noticed as I cleaned the rims and some talc like substance off the tyres when I mounted them.

Yes they are normal, as you have guessed they are wear indicators.
Why are they holes ? No idea.
PS, you should have something soft under those brake levers to protect them when the bike is upside down :?He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -
Why are they holes ?
Not sure how else a wear indicator would work. When the surrounding rubber wears down to the depth of the hole the tyre is worn. Simple, cheap but effective. Kind of makes me think they were invented by the Ruskies!0 -
will make sure I put something under the levers next time. I usually clamp it in the turbo if doing anything but it was just quicker this way.
I honestly didnt know what to think with the holes, I thought it would just be simple like getting down the protective belt or a different colour rubber compound or something along them lines.FCN: 5/6 Fixed Gear (quite rapid) in normal clothes and clips

Why? They're not made of glass you know. They're actually quite strong.- - - - - - - - - -

Never had a problem with not putting things under brake levers when upside down. Seems a bit OCD to me.0

Tyres don't look worn to me0

(Why put something under the brake levers ?)
Because they are one or the most expensive things on the bike
They are made of plastic
The top plate is easily damaged
Better resale value if undamaged

Any care or maintenance I practice is to prolong the life of components rather than aesthetic appeal or to improve resale value. Each to their own though.
A hole in the tyre seems rather basic, surely that's a weak spot for punctures? A different colour rubber plug in the hole would be a better solution, once that disappears - replace.0
