Mudgaurd Etiquette

Right, I've flung myself into this road bike nonsense at the deep end by joining a club and trying to keep up with the big boys. (I'm a mountain biker, really)

One thing I can't get a straight answer with is when it's unacceptable to not have mudgaurds fitted to my bike.

If it's forecast for pishing rain, as it is this weekend, am I expected to fit mudgaurds before the club run that I'm planning on attending? Or can I relax until it's winter?

you'd be better off actually asking someone from your club, I would have thought. Some clubs get upset about it, some don't....

I would have thought it's ok to ride without if it's only a forecast for occasional showers but if it's going to rain all day then you should ride with guards.

If everyone else has mudguards, and it's raining then at least have the courtesy to ride at the back.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

We just use mudguards for the winter
If it rains in the summer no big deal

IME clubs in the north have more established rules on this that many in the south - it does depend on club to club / group to group and time of year so best to ask. Just apply a bit of common sense.. for really wet rides I'd prefer to go out in a pair where you can ride side-by-side rather than spend 3-4 hours getting a face-full of cr@p.

Yeah keep telling yourself that  before you know it your road bike will cost more than your mountain bike and you'll be posting "to shave or not to shave them" questions

Ask your club mates, no one would think any less of you for asking and if they do it's probably not a very good club anyway.
