I ride the road up to Riber (near Matlock, Derbys) maybe once a week, which I think is described as 22%.

Any other steep hills in the Midlands?

I wonder how they work these % out.It seems to me that on the inside bends it'swell over 30% for a few yards now and then.

actually I thought you meant Rowsley Bar.

I suppose you would describe it as the road up to Riber Castle. Come off the A6 at Cromford, go past Cromford Mill and church both on left, take first proper left hand turing after bridge ... road goes downwards a little after first part of climb, go past pub on right, take right at the crest of the next little hill .... road doubles back a little before twisting climb upwards to Riber Castle.

Any hill less than 20% is cissy.
  • This ones not bad. Chesterfield Road from the Chatsworth Road end.

    (Hopefully the link works)
  • Forgot to say, it starts at around 10 - 12% , then through the switchbacks it goes between 20 - 25% for a decent lenght....... :D

I doubt you'll get steeper than Riber - harder yes but nothing steeper than the short sections of Riber.

If you want some more steep ones nearby then Rowsley Bar that has already been mentioned is harder than Riber imo, Hinderstich Lane on the left off the road from Whatstandwell to Crich is steepish too and worth mentioning as it's local. There are some others up near Wessington? I think and some up round Stanton Moor which are in the same sort of area.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

The road out of Rowsley up towards Stanton nips a bit as well, though its a while since I rode up there. No more Elton caff at the end of it :(

Not quite sure of the actual % of these, but the're tough climbs

    Sydnope Hill from Two Dales
    Bank Road in Matlock
The hill from Monsal Dale through Cressbook towards Tideswell
    Crowdecote Bank
    Cromford Hill
Lea Bridge to Holloway (nr Cromford) then turn left to High Lane
Barnsley Lane (off Wirksworth Road) up to Alport Heights
    The Pinch/Oxclose Lane (nr Stanhope)
    Mawstone Lane, Youlgreave
    Ilam Moor Lane (from Ilam)
    Winnats Pass, Castleton
    Siggate Hill, Castleton

There's a few steep ones further south. Rylah Hill going from the A617/M1 junction 29 to Palterton's a killer, Castle Hill up to Bolsover.
It's been a few years since I've ridden them, OK, A FEW DECADES! but hellishly steep in my memory.
Blackbank near Stanfree's a pig too, must be near 1/5 at its steepest!

    Mow Cop?

I'm doing the 100 greatest cycling climbs book by Simon Warren in a year for charity - and a lot of the midland climbs are already up on my blog - www.100hillsforgeorge.blogspot.com - there is some video there and some garmin data too so you can locate them!

    Cheers

Out of Monsal towards Tideswell is indeed a pig of a climb, as is Siggate out of Castleton.

Winnats is horrible, too many cars.
