Budget up to around £150 for a front and rear set (no rotors needed) just caliper, hose and lever - need to be pre-bled.

The new brakes are going on my main bike which gets used for anything from XC to Ben Nevis red type runs. Basically my commuter bike got knocked over and bust one of the levers so the current ones from my MTB are going on the commuter and the MTB gets new brakes :-)

So far its narrowed down to:
Hayes Stroker Trail
OR
Shimano SLX

Shimano edges it so far from reviews / using other shimano brakes / ease of getting spares but other suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

  • +1 for the SLX. Nice and simple to use and maintain.

£153 after discount. superb brakes as the are just the same as formula the ones apart from the fact they lack reach adjustment dial. you also get a pair of formula 203mm rotors and the fitting kits so you could sell them on and pay even less for your brakes.

Hayes get slagged off for lack of feel, but they have loads of power and mine at least have needed no maintenance in three years.
Or look at basic Deore, cheap, powerful and good reviews.

I've just ordered the Formula Oro K18's for £125 from Merlin. These will replace my Hayes Stroker Rydes.

    Like the Oro Mega ones.

Also just come across these: XT front
and XT rear which would come in at £135 as I have a 10% voucher for rutland.

Any body got any experience as to which is a better all-rounder out of the XT and Oro mega?

    Cheers!

Just put the Oro K18's on. Even after a short ride up the road they feel better than the Hayes.
