I ride often and can do some miles, 60+ 2-3 times a week on a hybrid. I wonder how much further and faster I could go on a road bike. I'm looking at sportive style bikes and want to hit the cycle to work scheme budget point of £1000. Should I go for a carbon frame fitted with tiagra - ribble sportive bianco or any other alu framed roadbike with better kit - 105 or better for roughly the same money? which will make the most difference to my riding - I reckon gears but am open to being wrong!

Go for the frame over gears.

The high end groupsets are lighter and look better - tiagra upwards will you be fine.

Definitely invest more into the frame. The frame will be most important, as with gears it doesn't affect the ride that much, only how well it shifts.

That Focus looks like a damn good deal!
  • Agree, that the focus looks good, but can't find cycle to work scheme with wiggle. Can you buy it anywhere else? Am i wrong do wiggle c2w? I would just buy it, but if theres a similar bike around to buy through c2w i'll go for that instead. Advice on the frame vs gears is welcomed cheers. The Sportive Bianco looks like its hit the top spot again. Anybody got one? Whats it like?
  • You can always change the gears etc later...best getting the frame out of the way first then work round it.

The bike above is a good call, give Halfords a shout as they are selling off the Boardman 2010 full carbon bikes for £999
