Ahhh everyone's favourite thread, the 'lets look at pretty cars' one.
Anyway, I wanted a Peugeot 207 5dr, but my 407 is an electrical nightmare, a mates 207 has had a major breakdown twice in three months, and another's Pug is a bag of gremlins a few years in. Grande Punto's seem rubbish from user feedback but look smart, I sat in a focus and felt like a grandad, the Golf is horrid inside.... and I've a 4k budget.
So what's left to consider??
I'm after a 1.4ish diesel that doesn't look like a fart.

Just caught my stomach there. You may be right. I'm not sure if I could live with myself though. Where the hell is the decent looking, decent handling small hatch that doesn't panic everytime it sees tarmac??0 -
Bah.. I had a 406 2.1td "executive" when I was in uni :P
Full leather, climate control, cruise control, heated seats etc etc etc... all for £700!
I'd love another.. used to get 45mpg at 110mph0 -

God damn it! I told you already man! I don't want a car that ticks all the boxes for everything I need but the most important one; the 'that's the car I want box', which ultimately is not ticked by ticking all the other tick boxes!!

I had an 807 and it cost me thousands to sort out. Sold it to we buy any car.com because I felt to guilty to sell it to a member of the public. Replaced it with a 55 plate fiesta. Best thing I ever did, save £600 insurance loads less in tax and fuel. so my advice is a fiesta ( which I paid just under £4k for with 36k on the clock)This is my bike. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My bike is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my bike is useless. Without my bike, I am useless.0

Why are MTB economics; spend twice as much as you intended, but only half as much as you wish you could afford? :roll:0 -
I have a Mazda 3. In 3 years I have never had a breakdown. (touch wood and all that crap)
Buy Japanese, you wont regret it!"it's like a gift, you know? It's like I can't control it"0 -
Ford Focus is an good and good-value hatchback and fun to drive too - they really do have excellent handling.0

another vote for the Fabia vRS, SWMBO and I have had one and their a fantastic little car but they are far from a Hot Hatch (that is easily solved by some choice modifycations)
Things to be aware of with the Fabia vRS, they came with White Cloth seats (unless you bought a vRS SE or specced leather as an optional extra at new).
We used to get mid 50's mpg out of ours and it had a hard life. Any of that style will be a great little motor Polo/Ibiza/Fabia as they all share the same floorpan/suspension/brakes/engines etc.
Don't buy a Fabia vRS without service history though as the KKK turbos that are fitted don't last long without being serviced on a regular basis.0 -
Ford Fusion 1.4 TDci, unwanted so cheap (unfashionable Fiesta), loads of space (bigger Fiesta), tidy handling (it's a Fiesta) and a PSA CR engine.
SimonCurrently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
I know you say you've had issues with Peugeots but I love our 307 SW, its the 2.0 Hdi. It has a hard life but does mpost things well.0

Just been through the same rigmorole and ended up buying a new shape Fiesta zetec. wife gets 55mpg from 1.4tdci on motorway commute. we also looked at Ibiza, fabia (she didnt like it), punto, and Alfa Mito (punto in drag and bit expensive)
1.4 engine in fiesta is a bit sackless, with only 70 ish BHP, but its all right.2014 Whyte T-129S0 -

Bloody fusions holding up the roads and causing accidents! Grrrr
Stay away from anything french it will break, and when it does there the worst to work on so can pump up the labour costs!
I can however recomend Seat/VW/Skoda's as they dont have anything too flash, dont break and are usually pretty good to drive.0 -
Well it turns out the Fabia VRS requires the same insurance as my current 407, and a 1.6ish Pug 207. The tax is 100pounds less than my 407... apart from it being pig ugly I'm not seeing the down side here.
Ford Focus - dadmobile
Ford Fusion - Dads Dadmobile
New shape Fiesta - out of budget
Stroky beard moment over the VRS. Mates brother has one. Will test drive soon.0 -
oh, and i'll look into the C4 a bit more0

Not a bad car... I wanted a Loeb version but couldn't find one so went for a 206 instead.0
