Insurance for Europe - Tips?

Hi,

Before I started this, I did search for other posts so sorry if its a repost.

I am travelling from Newcastle to Amsterdam and down to Brugge via Rotterdam in Sept/Oct. When you add it up, I will be carrying a lot (money wise too) of gear, inc the bike. As it stands I looked at this site, which seems to cover all basis but as I have never done it I thought I would check for suggestions please:

I want a policy seperate from home insurance to save any bother or so, something dedicated I think is best. I forsee my bike, gear (including a Satmap unit) totalling about £1200 plus clothing etc.

I intend to do this with some others using a small trailer, as I dont fancy panniers on my compact road bike (Giant Defy 2) - I do see a touring bike for about £350 that I fancy, but I have done my training on road bike with SPDs so I think it will be different on the tourer.

Like I say, any suggestions on travel insruance companies or the trip would be great please!

I am off to France next week for a bit of cycling and after checking Moneysavingexpert.com plumped for this outfit: http://www.annualtravelinsurance.com/
I am not touring though so it may be worth checking if that incurs a higher premium and needless to say you need to have a helmet on to be insured.
The free European Health Card will get you free treatment in Europe but isn't a substitute for travel insurance.

One problem about bike insurance and touring is that they will require you to use a lock/chain certified to a certain level for the insurance to be valid. Such locks and chains tend to weigh a ton adding further to all the gear you will be carrying.

I do carry health insurance when on tour but also - watch the bikes like a hawk, carry a lighter D lock and make sure I can find a secure room wherever we are staying and do not insure the bikes.
