that doesnt proove anything. you could have spun it by hand or key in a personally prefered wheel diameter.

Well my Garmin says the max speed I ever hit (downhill on a 12%) was 52.5mph (84kph).... and i can tell you it was downright scary!

but then I suppose I could have taken it in the car (oh ye of little faith...)

Yep...busted! I am taking the stabilisers off next week

Best downhill 49.5mph. Just couldn't crack the 50. Got back all excited - told wife - she went ballistic! You've got to love 'em!

Ha ha, i was exactly the same and got the same reaction when trying to hit 50! 48.2 is my closest, but i plan to beat that at some point!

81 kmh is very fast (just over 50mph i think). In a 54/11 gear, that's Spartacus pulling out 130 rpm, so i doubt he could keep that up for very long! Although on the flat that would still be very impressive.

Of course, you see it sometimes in the tours when riders are drafting cars back up to the peloton at around about this sort of speed, but again, that's with zero wind resistance. I've no idea what difference it makes in numbers, but let's say you work 30% less with a draft, than 50mph behind a car is like 35 mph on your own!

Managed 48.5 downhill last week. Was fine. It does seem to get exponentially more scary though.

    Still want that damn 50.

I have managed 70kmph / 43.75mph and that was a bit scary. However, I am now running Giant slicks where as before I had the original treaded Kendas that came with the bike and 40mph on the same stretch f road was quite scary.

It was still scary on the slicks, but it felt a bit more stable :)

I did 60mph a few years ago in the World Awesome Championships. Could of gone faster, but i was too busy thinking about going pro after I got over 57mph. Held the 60 steady for 23 mins then stopped as I didn't want to get to tired as I had around a 4000km ride back home.

and the good while is 10 seconds? ...ww tit
no one really cares bud, ask around.

'tis a shame that OPs original idea of how to go balls out on the flat has descended into how fast can I go downhill, utterly utterly pointless

reminds me of the SCR thread in commuting section, some one was bragging about a scalp (passing some one out) they got whilst they were doing 40mph up a slight incline...

awesome, those are pro tour speeds. From this weeks Tour de france closing timetrial in Grenoble (a somewhat hilly 42.5km with a 523m ascent) tony martin averaged 42.9kph (28.5mph) for 55mins34seconds. Something to think about.

    talent and training ;)

fastest ive hit is 41.7mph on a flat. sometimes you gotta take into consideration age also.

the older you get (obviously) the lower your top end speed is and the better you keep going at a highish speed for ages ;). from my experience anyway.
