Schwalbe tubeless go pop

recently moved to stan flow rims for my nobly nic folders (with sealant); on the first outing I tore the side wall after landing skew whif and the tire started deflating.

Before this however I thought I heard air escaping on some hard turns: could it be possible that the bead hadn't seated correctly and the tire dropped in pressure slightly?

The tyre certainly felt "loose" throughout the ride..

Anyway; Can I repair the rip with an internal patch, refill with sealant and try again or is it new rubber?

If the latter I'm fancying some maxxis ust for trail & single track; any recommendations?

Cheers

No reason you can't repair it - depending how big the hole is. I've heard sewing it together with dental floss can work well in conjunction with a patch, not tried it myself!

I've patched and put more sealant; time will tell

Nobby Nic evo USTs came with my bike - not impressed with them at all, both tyres cut easily on chalky/flinty terrain (separate rides) - one terminally, one the sealant barely managed to seal, and is now hanging in the garage, patched and kept as a 'spare'.

They're incredibly light, but the trade off is how thin the sidewalls are. After my experience, I'd just lost confidence in them - that said, my mate has them too, and hasn't had the same problems.

Swapped to a pair of Maxxis Ardents - very happy with those.

Nobby Nic's are notorious for being prone to cuts/splits/tears due to sharp rocks ... bought some myself, Fr & Rr, before I knew this ... so far so good, but keeping an eye on them & give them a good eyeballing after a ride in case there's any splits developing ...

Well, it seems to be holding...

What I noticed (running 30psi) was that the tyre seemed to expel air on hard turns which didn't inspire confidence giving a rolling over sensation

I'll see how they go then swap to Maxxis later

  • I run maxxis tyers tubeless and have had no problems thus far. I run a kevlar beaded minion dhf up front in a 2.35 (not ust) and a wire beaded highroller on the rear in 2.35 (not ust). I dont like running my pressures below about 27/8 psi and do tend to run the rear a little firmer. I never loose pressure with the non ust versions and the seat and seal up lovely (the wire is a bit more of a faf though). In future I will be opting for wire beaded maxxis tyers to run tubeless as they work brilliantly once on and I think the savings on proce outweigh the benefits of the more expencieve folding and ust versions.
eg...... (all prices are the cheapest I found on google shopping for 2.35 maxxis high rollers)

    £22.40 wire beaded 60a (£44.80 per set) 775g
    £28.00 kevlar bead 60a (£56 per set) 690g
    £42 ust 62/70a (84 per set) 900g

I realise that the ust is dual compound but still dont think its worth it. If your worried about weight and are a particularly patient person I would recommend the kevlar beaded single ply as these are a doddle to set up.

Hope this advise helps and saves you a few quid when you come to replace your schwalbes. Also think about a minion up front they roll nearly as well as a HR but have silly abounts of grip in all conditions.

I run Rocket Rons on Alpine Rims, The knack to getting them seated properly is plenty of soapy water and then pump them up to about 45 psi and leave them at the pressure for about an hour, rolling and bouncing them a bit helps. I get a perfect seal everytime with this method and don't burp any air.
