Hi guys, about 2 weeks ago i started getting bad pains in both knees & ankles whilst out on a 20 mile bike ride.

Now i occasionally have had twinges of pain in my left knee for the past year. When i went to the doctors, he had a feel & basically told me that he couldn't see anything wrong with them and they couldn't do anything about it anyway.

This time round though the pain is really bad. the left knee feels like the pain is behind the knee, whereas the right knee has the pain at the front.

This time the doctor has put me on Diclofenac, but it isn't doing squat. He has also recommended an appointment at physio, which i am still waiting for.

Only trouble is, i use my bike for work, as its the only way i can get there. i start before the buses, and if im on the late shift i would finish after the buses.

this is what i am basically doing twice a day 5 days a week. sometimes even 7

Does anyone have any similar tales/solutions/advice

PS i am currently doing this on a Carrera Fury MTB

but i am debating on buying a Specialized Secteur Elite next week

Pain behind the knee is usually saddle too high. Pain infront of the knee is saddle too low. So I would suggest that your saddle is too high on the left and too low on thr right. From this I can deduce that you are cycling up hill sidewards.

Or maybe you're pushing too high a gear, that can put a terrible strain on the joints. Try spinning and see if that helps.

i had knee pain for a while but cycling made it better, but it took time. I would echo the other comments here, see a physio/osteopath and ensure its not a potentially fixable problem.

Think about other situations where the knee hurts, is it just the bike? if it is as suggested look at set up first followed by technique. My knee pain was most improved when i learned about cadence and the benifit of pedalling faster in a lower easier gear.

Finally, get your feet checked. Sweatshop and other sport shops will look at how your feet mechanics are working and how much your feet twist and what, if any support you need. You can then decide on wether you need insoles to keep your foot, and consequenlty your knee in the right place. Essential if you use cleats or straps to fix your foot to the pedal
