Broken chain

Riding home on the road last week the chain snapped - first time I've ever had that happen.
Bike is a Trek 6700, about 3yrs old now.
Took out the chewed up link and now the chain jumps when I put any pressure on - such as uphill climbs.
Do I need to replace the whole chainset and sprockets?

But how old is the chain?
Had similar experiences, you might find that there are other links that have been deformed causing the chain to skip. Its also possible that however you've joined it isn't complete?
I had a case where the chain failure was clearly part of bigger manufacturing problem as I could see cracks in other links of the same chain (wipperman). So I replaced the chain, now-a-days I always replace a failed chain as a precaution. I also stick to KMC chains (or OEM).
Depending on the amount you ride and in what conditions, you might find that both the chain and cassette are worn down (after 3 years), so you might be looking at replacing both!0 -
Probably a stiff link where you joined it again. If so waggle the chain sideways at that point and it will loosen up.I don't do smileys.
