Why do we call cleat retention pedals clipless?

I know toe clips have been around for longer and have claimed the clip moniker, but cleated shoes actually do clip into the pedal. Toe clips are more slide ins and truly clipless pedals are simple flat ones.

Odd the least appropriate type get the clipless title.

Yes, before you ask, I am a tad bored. :-)

Because it is snappier than "clip-on-the-top-less-but-with-that-other-clippy-thing-under-your-foot-that-you-clip-into".

If you ever aspired to the user name shouldbeinmarketing, I think you should re-assess.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

  • Because they do not have toe clips

because toe strapswere known as 'clips' and so as you dont need those straps with SPD they are therefore clip 'less' i.e. no clips

Same reason why this extraordinary machine is called an Ordinary Bicycle.
