I'd be a little wary of them agreeing to order a 53 in the first place - suggesting that that is the right size for you - then changing their mind when they find they can't get it and saying the 55 is right.

You can fiddle with things, such as stem and spacing, to get the right fit. And they have a point that you're not used to road bikes but all the same if it doesn't feel right, don't buy it.

I was lucky in that I could ride bikes of different size against each other back to back: is there no way you can do that?

My old man rides a 53cm Nirone 7 and he's 5ft 9. Another pal has the 55cm and that fits me well and im 5ft 11 with a 32 inside leg. I guess it depends on how you like your bike to be set up, but IMO i would steer away from the 55cm as its going to be too much of a stretch.

Agreed - all bikes are different, but a bike shop tried to persuade me into a 56cm bike because that's what they had in stock. 54cm was the right size for me - I'm 5ft9 - and I'm happier on that by far. 55cm for 5ft7 suggests either too big or weird geometry to me!

I'm 5'8" and a online bike fit calculator recommended I take a 56cm frame. Both my road bikes are 54cm. I've a sneaking suspicion that the 56cm frame might be right for me as I'm fairly long limbed for my height and the extra length of the top tube would give me a more aggressive racing position.
