Stronglight BB Question

Guys/Gals,

I have a Stronglight chainset and BB as per:

http://www.stronglight.com/stronglight/page.php?nom=produit&keyProd=FissionDoubleInox

I have a creak from the BB and tried to dismantle it. The non-drive side comes apart easily but the fixed drive side does not come out with the axle like i would expect. I can see the bearing on the non-drive side but not pull it out (its quite tight on the "axle") and whether this bearing or the drive side bearing is not releasing I'm not sure.

Would it be ok to try and tap it free using a rubber mallet or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Alistair

It depends on the specific design of the chainset - the axle will be fixed at one end to the crank. Likewise the bearing may be a press-fit onto the axle too. I know some other Stronglight chainsets have some unusual bearing arrangements, but I'm not familiar with this one. FWIW Sugino make a lot of Stronglight's chainsets so might be worth looking on their website?
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

You're right, the axle is fixed at one end of the crank and there are two press fit bearings. I'll have a look at the Sugino web site.

I couldn't find anything on the Sugino web site. I reassembled the non-drive side and put the BB back together and the clunk has gone. I'm pretty sure I will need to use a block of wood and a hammer to remove the drive side as both bearings are press fit. I can't see any other way of doing it but will wait until the bearings need re-greasing (hopefully not too soon!)

If the bearings are press-fit on the spindle then you'll probably need a fork or scissor-type bearing puller which isn't something you'll usually find down your LBS. The Campagnolo Ultratorque bearing puller might work too.

Thanks mate that may well work once I get the bearings out from the BB..

First problem though will be getting the fixed axle (with the chainrings on) out of the BB. I think I'll have to tap it out using a hammer and piece of wood, can't see any other way...
