Guy on the work team has broken his arm - and as one of the few other regular cyclists they have asked me to fill in! I only do a 20mile round trip commute at the moment - with a very few longer rides. Is it even worth considering? would i embaress myself? Its the one on Monday so I'd have no time to train at all!

Is that the long one or the Galibier/d'Huez one?
If the long one, I think it might be tough.
If the d'Huez one and you're light, then you might be ok.0 -
Go for it what is the worst that can happen?0

Its 68 miles right? Take JG's advice, just take it really really stready and make sure you have a compact and big cassette on the back - I had a 11-28.
There's no embarrassment involved. There'll be thousands and the atmosphere is great, although at the top of Galibier its spookily silent.
I'm hooked on the Alps after my first trip and I'm not at all suited to going uphill.0 -
Go for it!

Yeah go for it, it's a great experience. You'll be surprised at how much good your commute does you in terms of fitness anyway!
