Why, when adding comments to news articles, are you required to fill in the anti-bot thing, even though you are signed in? I assume you can't add comments without signing in, so what security does it add?

Because spammers sign in as well.
It's not foolproof but it generally stops them from adding comments automatically. Spamming by adding one comment at a time is not very efficient.Jeff Jones

So why not ad the captcha to the forums? Hardly anyone comments on the news yet the forums can attract hundreds, or thousands of hits (if it's got porn in the title). Surely they would get more attention in a forum than on the news articles?0

the forum is easier to manage. the reviews are not. Captcha sorts that."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
