Chainring question

I do not know much about gears and chainrings but would I be correct in thinking a 22 chainring in the lowest gear would give me lower gear than a 27 chainring ? or is there not a lot in it.
The reason I ask is I had a 3x9 42/33/22 set up on my old Boardman Team but my new Boardman pro has 2x10 42/27 setup and when grinding up a hill in the granny ring I seem to think I need one more lower gear than on my old 3x9 set up, I find it harder to climb using the 2x10 where as before it was never a problem.

That is correct. But you cannot add anything lower than 27 to your existing set up, as the mech will not take the jump.0

Aha thanks I thought so, I will just have to live with it then and get used to it.0

Well you could change the whole lot to say a 38/24.0

In case you're not clear.....
The front mech can only cope with a gap of up to 14 teeth between the two rings.
You may well have a 36 tooth big cog on the back, so 27/36= 0.75
Your old bike probably had a 32 tooth big cog on the cassette. So 22/32=0.69
So you've probably lost about one gear. If you changed to a 24t small ring you'd have 24/36=0.67 which is easier than your old setup.0
