Saddle Width

How particular are you about saddle width ?

Before the arione, I owned a charge spoon. The reason why i flogged my spoon was that within a few miles I got pains down the inside of each thigh and down the backs and I was regularly having to pedal out of the saddle to relieve them. In this aspect, the arione was a revelation, no leg pain to speak of and legs were strong as an ox when it came to taking on hills . The reason the arione HAD to go was because riding on it was like having the perineum area of the body rubbed with a sanding block after a while, very very uncomfortable, abrasive and quite sore. It felt like my @rse was glowing in the dark after using it.

The spoon was 138mm and the arione 130mm in width......interesting

If the arione DIDNT have that concave shape , didnt have the bulk of the weight on the perineum and had a pressure relieving channel, imo it might just be the THE ultimate saddle, aside from the scrote chaffing, it was stupendously good.

New saddle in the post is a ritchey pro biomax type. 210g , 131mm wide and has pressure alleviating cutout. I cant wait to get it and have high hopes for it. So........how particular are you when it comes to saddle width ?

Saddle width has more to do with how wide your sit bones are, and what feels comfortable, than to a preference of number so to say. Some saddles are built for narrower people, some for wider.

That said, I can't say I have even thought much about width, but then again I've had a saddle I like for almost a year, and just stick with it. I should check how wide I is sometime!

Shape is also important. I measured up for a 143 Toupe which was OK for some time but on long rides gave me bruising on my sit bones. I now use a Selle Italia Flite Gel-flo which is 130mm but is much less flat across the rear. For me the best saddle I have ever had.

I'm hoping you find one you like. Nothing worse than one that's just plain wrong for you.
I would however caution you to NOT expect to find a saddle that is as comfortable as your sofa. My wife has this great big goofy looking saddle that has almost as much padding as your favorite chair yet she was still complaining after a 40 mile ride. As for me I believe that you've found your saddle if you feel OK after, oh say 75 miles. There is also a little item that some people like to call "ass time in the saddle". To say that you need to get used to riding on racing bike saddles is something of an understatement.

Saddles are trial and error, but I've had similar experience with saddles - got an Arione with the SuperSix, had perineum numbness over 50 miles, so changed to 130mm Romin - much better. Then tried the 143mm Romin having had sit bones measured, but marginally less comfortable, so have reverted to the 130mm, which though looking like a blade and being pretty hard, is very comfortable for long rides. Padding and width do not equal comfort.

San Marco Regal E aka the updated Belgian Sofa

Best saddle my 4rse has ever sat on. Sharp at the front, wide at the back. It looks great too.
